Life with a terrier can be a lot of fun, they are full of energy and personality. The are boundless in their curiosity and wanting to know what is going on in their environment. They love people and are a great breed for a child to grow up with. I would suggest that the child be at least 6-7 years old as Terriers love to play hard, you want the child to have a little size to handle the energy of a Terrier.
A Smooth Fox Terrier retains their puppy exuberance and energy for life. They live on average 12--16 years, 16 years be on the far side. They have very few health problems as a breed. The Smooth Fox Terrier is a very easy breed to take care of, as they need little trimming or coat care except a bath one a month, to bathe more frequently causes a loss of natural oils in the coat. I am not saying that if the dog get dirty you can clean them up, just keep in mind that it does strip oils out of the coat, and have their nails trimmed once every 7-10 days. They get along fine on most good quality dog food. We feed our show dogs Purina One. It maintains all aspects of their health, coat, muscle tone and development to the highest level possible.
All Terriers can be rambunctious with other dogs. Attending a obedience class with your dog is a good idea, start early. This applies to all dogs, because you want to have control over any dog so they will do as you want. It is also good in that it gets your dog exposed to other dogs and situations. This helps to socialize any dog to proper, acceptable behavior.
How to Chose a good breeder
A good breeder will always put a lot of love and time into their dogs. You should always see at least one parent so as you can see how sound the dog is and what kind of temperament the parent has. This give you a good indication of how the pup will turn out.
You also want to see where the pups are raised, the living area should be clean and well maintained. Furthermore, the pups should have a good area to exercise in. It is so important to proper development that they get plenty of exercise.
All pups should have their proper shots up to date at time of purchase. The seller should provide you with information as what shots have been given and when they were given. Furthermore, what shots will be needed as the age. You should also receive a record for worming that has been done as well. They should also provide you with registration papers from the AKC( The American Kennel Club).
Never Never Never buy a pup from a pet shop or puppy mill, as you will never get a top quality pup. A puppy cannot develop properly without proper exercise and a proper environment and these people can't give an appropriate environment in a pet shop, or puppy mill.
Not possible!!!
So make sure of the breeder. Area to check to find a reputable breeder, 1. The American Kennel Club 2. The American Fox Terrier Club 3. The AKC Gazette which can be found at your local library with any luck. Any breeder listed with these two organizations should be good, but always check against the recommendations list above.
The cost of a well raised pup will vary depending on whether the pup is show quality or pet quality but a good quality pet grade will start at around $400.00 and if it's a real top quality show dog, prices could run as high as $2500-3000, but that is the very top end. Please, also remember that a breeder is lucky to break even on the average pup after all the care, vet cost and time put in to raise a pup right.
